On Aug. 16, a Kirkland resident reported that someone cashed a fraudulent check on the Island, in the 2800 block of 80th Avenue S.E. The check, which was drawn on the Kirkland victim's account, was one of two checks stolen along with the victim's driver's license, from an office desk in Bellevue. Vandalism At 10 a.m. Aug. 16, park maintenance workers found graffiti on a structure at the Mercerdale Skateboard Park. Workers told police it was the third time in the past few weeks that there has been vandalism at the park; however, this was the first time it was reported to police. Vehicle prowls Someone rummaged through an unlocked Plymouth Voyager mini-van then left the door open during the night of Aug. 15. The vehicle was parked on the street outside a residence in the 4000 block of 91st Avenue S.E. Nothing was reported missing from the vehicle.

At 3:30 p.m. Aug. 10., an antique wood pendulum table clock was reported missing from a vehicle parked at a residence in the 9200 block of S.E. 70th Place. A 20-foot aluminum ladder was missing from the yard of the residence on July 28.

At about 9 a.m. Aug. 15, a resident of the 3600 block of 92nd Avenue S.E. reported that someone stole several electronics items from the rear and center console of a Jeep parked in the driveway of the residence. The soft top of the Jeep was down when the thefts occurred. Missing from the vehicle was an iPod, Palm Pilot, airport card, Apple laptop computer, computer case, memory card and two adapters.

A pair of Nikon binoculars and a Canon digital camera were stolen from an unlocked Subaru Legacy parked overnight Aug. 15 in the driveway of a residence in the 4000 block of 91st Avenue S.E. The victim found the dome light on in the vehicle, the items missing and the contents of the car rifled.

Two pairs of sunglasses were reported stolen Aug. 16 from a locked car in the 9200 block of S.E. 36th Place. There was no sign of forced entry to the vehicle.

Between 9 a.m. and 8:45 p.m., Aug. 16, someone broke into a car parked in the 3600 block of 84th Avenue S.E. The locks on the vehicle were damaged during the break-in and the vehicle registration, insurance information, vehicle manual and garage door remote control were stolen. Boat fire At 9:20 a.m., Aug. 16, Mercer Island Marine Patrol was called to assist six Mercer Island residents who were in the water of Lake Washington off Medina after the boat they were in caught fire. There were no injuries reported. The victims included two adults and four children ages 8 and 9. No information was available as to the cause of the fire or damage. Forgery On Aug. 15, a Houston resident reported that someone cashed checks fraudulently on an Island bank account. The victim had recently moved and forwarded mail to the Texas address. After the move, the checks were cashed on the victim’s Washington Mutual account, using someone else’s driver’s license information. Loss is estimated at $2,000. Stolen shrimp A 35-year-old Island man was arrested for shoplifting at about 7:30 p.m., Aug. 17, after he allegedly stole five bags of frozen shrimp from the Albertsons store in the 2700 block of 77th Avenue S.E. The shrimp was valued at $31.92. The suspect was booked into Renton City Jail. Missing scholarship check Between 1 p.m. Aug. 11 and Aug. 12, someone stole a $1,495 scholarship check made out to the victim’s name from an apartment in the 2700 block of 76th Avenue S.E.

Found keys A set of keys were turned in to the fire department on Aug. 11 and subsequently placed in Mercer Island police property. The person who turned in the keys didn’t say where the keys were found.
