Gertrude Hollis, an accomplished artist in a variety of mediums, is still an active painter at 96. Her desire to communicate her love of nature’s beauty has motivated her to paint and draw with determination and vigor for most of her life. She came to Co-Arts in 1972, nearly 40 years ago.

Originally from Boston, Hollis made the Seattle area her home when her husband was transferred in 1951. Prepared by her studies at the Massachusetts College of Art and the Art Students League of New York, she settled in to establish relationships in the art community here.

In the 60 years that have elapsed, Hollis has involved herself in the art community in many ways. She has taught both adults and children on Mercer Island, where she lives. She joined art organizations including Seattle Co-Arts, Women Painters of Washington and the Mercer Island Visual Arts League.

Hollis joined the Art Stall Cooperative at the Pike Place Market and painted regularly with the Frye Museum Group.

She has numerous paintings in private collections and displayed her work at many exhibitions and galleries, highlighted by hanging her work at the Seattle Art Museum’s Renta Loft and the Frederick and Nelson Gallery.

When asked what advice she would give to those starting out or building their art careers, Hollis stated that anyone can learn to paint, but learning to draw is an important foundation. She also stated that each painting should communicate with the viewer.

“It should say something,” she said.
