The Mercer Island girls water polo team opened its season with a win over Bainbridge Island, beating the Spartans 12-6 Monday, March 17 at Bainbridge Island High School.
Mallory Phillips led the way for Mercer Island, scoring 5 goals. Alicia Nordal had 4, Michelle Na scored twice and Ileana Lam also had a goal for the Islanders. In the net, Davis Simmons had 11 saves.
Next up, the Islanders will travel to Newport to take on the Knights at 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 19.
Fastpitch falls short against Federal Way
The Mercer Island fastpitch team tried to fight its way back after giving up 6 runs in the third inning against Federal Way Monday at South Mercer Playfield. But a 4-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning came up short, as the Islanders fell to the Eagles 11-9.
Lily Blakey went 3-3 for the Islanders, hitting for a triple and scoring 3 runs. Morgan Peyou was on the mound for Mercer Island, striking out 5 while allowing 8 earned runs on 14 hits. Jaclyn Gillis got the win for Federal Way, allowing 8 earned runs on on 11 hits while striking out 6.
Next for Mercer Island will be a matchup with Garfield at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 18 at South Mercer Playfield.
Boys soccer ties Issaquah
The Mercer Island boys soccer team opened its season with a non-conference game against Issaquah Monday night at Mercer Island High School, tying the Eagles 1-1. Sean Nevin struck for the Islanders in the 27th minute, while the Issaquah responded in the 33rd minute.
The Islanders will take on Roosevelt at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 19 at Mercer Island High School.
