Green Ribbon Commission launch

I was thrilled to be present last week at the launch of the Mercer Island Green Ribbon Commission, an ad hoc group with membership that includes the School Board, citizens and City Councilmembers. I was thrilled because of the intellectual capital in the big hall at the Community Center. Mercer Island has the talent and will to leap forward into the rapidly emerging sustainable economy. Thrilled because of the clear and measurable goals set forth to reduce carbon emissions to 80 percent of 2005 levels by 2050 and to reach all 22,000 residents, young, old and in between. Thrilled to learn about the range of actions that we can take as individual citizens. One of the first initiatives of the Green Ribbon Commission will be an analysis of which actions, if done collectively by the highest percentage of citizens, will result in the greatest impact on reducing carbon emissions. Something really big launched last week — perhaps the biggest advance on Mercer Island since the floating bridge connected us to the rest of the region.
