Silent Crow Productions, the producers of the “Deadliest Catch,” contacted the VFW in late March regarding the possible use of the Keewaydin Clubhouse for the filming of an episode of the popular show.

VFW Commander Frank Sorba said he was contacted by Mika Duncan of Silent Crow. He does not know how they found out about the hall, which is available for rent by the public.

Over the next few weeks, an agreement was reached to rent the VFW Keewaydin Clubhouse for the filming, April 6-9.

The production company paid the hall’s regular rental rate of $400 each day.

Silent Crow art directors arrived a few days beforehand to stage the hall for filming.

A crew brought in and set up new walls and furnishings, Crow said.

“The crew was fun to work with, and it was interesting to see how they transformed the hall into a cozy, welcoming living room setting,” Sorba said.

The segments will air on the show, which started its ninth season in April, later this season.

There may be opportunities to film future episodes at the VFW; however, there are no firm dates booked at this time, he added.

Sorba said that the hall has long been available for the community and the public to rent for parties and events. He has been overseeing the remodeling and refurbishing effort begun by past VFW leaders.

The hall was recognized just last week as a winner of the John C. Spellman award for the extensive restoration work done on the building that was built in 1922.

Over the last few years, there has been a new roof, internal repairs and landscaping done, much of it paid for by donations and grants. Sorba said that a community group is being formed to fund maintenance for the historic building for the long haul.

Sorba hopes that the hall can become an essential community asset.
