The Mercer Island Roatry Club has named two outstanding Mercer Island Students as Rotary Students for the month of November.
Peter Welch is a son of Mark and Tammy Welch. He is a member of Mercer Island High School varsity basketball and boys track teams. He is the ASB President this year at the school, a member of the senior service club, National Honors Society and the school’s Investment club.
He is a member of the Mercer Island Youth and Family Services Board. He is a student leader at the Mercer Island Presbyterian Church and a student leader on the church’s annual youth mission trip to Mexico. He is also a co-teacher for sixth graders at the churh and is a coach for ‘Little Dribblers’ basketball. He enjoys playing the piano, reading, cooking basketball and running.
He hopes to attend a small liberal arts college and study business or finance.
Devina Kumar is a daughter of Sunil and Seema Kumar. She is a member of the National Honor Society and is co-president and co-founder of the school’s knowledge bowl team. She runs for the cross country team and is the president and founder of the French Honor Society at the school She also plays Lacrosse and is a member of the symphonic and chamber orchestras, and is the features editor at of The Islander, the school’s student newspaper. She is involved with the Seattle Music Partners organization that gives music lessons to elementary school children and has volunteered at the Mercer Island Youth and Family Services Thrift shop. She has been a member on the Seattle Foundation youth grant making board.
She enjoys playing violin, reading and baking.
She hopes to attend a liberal arts college and pursue a career in either law, business or medicine.
