Win keeps MI baseball atop KingCo standings; boys soccer remains undefeated.

Islander baseball tops Kangs

Behind two runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning, Mercer Island baseball edged Lake Washington 4-3 Monday night at Island Crest Park. The Islanders improved to 7-1 in KingCo and 9-1 overall.

Noah Hsue went 1-3 with a triple and a run scored for the Islanders, while Anthony Scalzo, George Pallis and Brandon Lawler all batted in runs for Mercer Island.

Harrison Goonewardene earned the win in nearly six innings of work, allowing one earned run off five hits while striking out four, and Peter Lopes registered the save.

Mercer Island will take on Bellevue in a battle for KingCo’s top spot, with the first of their two-game stand at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 8 at Bellevue High School. The Wolverines are tied with the Islanders at 7-1 in league standings and are 8-1 overall.

Boys soccer beats Sammamish

Mercer Island soccer remained undefeated in the KingCo standings with a 4-2 win over Sammamish Monday night at Islander Stadium.

The Islanders saw their run of three-straight KingCo shutouts come to an end when the Totems’ Jaddir Gonzalez-Medina scored in the third minute, but a goal from Ryan Hill and a hat trick from Alex Chung kept the Islanders’ league record unblemished, improving to 4-0-0 in KingCo and 4-1-2 overall.

Mercer Island takes on Liberty at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 8 at Liberty High School. The Patriots are second in league standings at 3-0-1 in KingCo and 4-1-2 overall.
