Five Islander gymnasts will represent the Mercer Island gymnastics team at the state championships this weekend.
Cece Belady, Stephanie Prince, Emily Culbertson, Esther Leung and Mya Levin all advanced from the 3A Sea-King district meet, which took place Saturday, Feb. 13 at Ballard High School.
Culbertson and Levin each qualified for three state events. Culbertson placed ninth overall on vault (8.075), 16th on bars (7.125) and 27th on floor (8.4). Levin was seventh on vault (8.225), 17th on bars (7.1) and 28th on floor (8.35).
Belady tied for 10th place on floor (9) with Ballard’s Hannah Hudson and was 17th on beam (7.9) to advance in those two events.
Prince tied for sixth place on floor (9.075) with Bainbridge’s Remi Rosencrans, and Leung tied for 12th place on vault (7.9) with Bellevue’s Stella Pratt to also advance.
As a team, Mercer Island placed fifth at the district meet with a team score of 148.15. Finishing in the top three at the district meet, Holy Names, Ballard and Bainbridge all advanced as teams to the state championships. Holy Names won with a score of 169.85, with Ballard coming in second (164.675) and Bainbridge third (161.75).
The 3A gymnastics state championships will be Feb. 19-20 at the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall.
