The Mercer Island wrestling team celebrated Senior Night with a 48-24 win over the Liberty Patriots Thursday, Jan. 16 at Mercer Island High School. With the win, the Islanders improved its KingCo record to 5-0.
Seniors Evan King, Jake Pruchno and Kenji Walker all earned wins for the Islanders. King (285) opened the meet with a win by forfeit, while Pruchno (132) won by a 14-3 major decision over Zach Toombs and Walker (145) won by a 10-4 decision over Juan Flores.
Kevin Pedersen (106) won by forfeit and Taylan Yuasa (113) improved his individual record to 18-2 with a technical fall over Joseph Jarmen. Liberty’s Dillon Ching (120) pinned Ailin Fu, while Luke Wilson (126) pinned Kyle Armstrong and Scott Lee (138) pinned Alec Bluhm. Mike Ong (152) won by an 11-7 decision over Jimmy Andrus and Nic Meinzinger-Richards (160) won by a 7-0 decision over Cooper Antin.
The Patriots earned wins in the 170 and 182 matches, with Connor Small pinning Teague Frazier and Quinn Magendanz pinning Tanner Ranz. Evan Condon (195) pinned Will Nguyen and Liberty’s Zach Arthur (220) pinned Dylan Majewski.
Next, the Islanders will take on KingCo rivals Mount Si at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23 at Mount Si High School.
