It was a tough week for the Islanders volleyball team. Heading into their Monday, Sept. 27, match against Liberty, Mercer Island was undefeated, nipping on the heels of KingCo leader Mount Si. But two losses in conference games put the Islanders in a spot that they haven’t seen in awhile, halfway through their season.
Currently sitting with a 5-2 league and 6-2 overall record, the Islanders lost 3-2 to Liberty last Monday, followed by a 3-0 loss at Mount Si on Wednesday.
The Patriots managed one of the biggest upsets in KingCo this season, forcing five games (25-12, 19-25, 25-22, 22-25, 5-15) against Mercer Island.
Two days later the Islanders traveled to Mount Si for what they knew was going to be one of the toughest matches of the season. Mercer Island and Mount Si duked it out last season in the KingCo tournament, going for five long games, leaving the Islanders on top. But this time around, the Islanders couldn’t find their way, losing 3-0 (25-11, 25-23, 25-9).
The team will play at Juanita tonight and travel to Interlake next Monday and then to Bellevue next Wednesday.
