The King County Green Schools Program recognized three Mercer Island-area schools last month.
Lakeridge Elementary School, Mercer Island High School and the French American School of Puget Sound each received Sustaining Green School 2021-22 recognition for the following levels of the program: Level Three (water conservation and pollution prevention), Level Two (energy conservation) and Level One (waste reduction and recycling). They also completed an additional conservation action or educational strategy.
They were among 37 schools and 56 student teams recognized for their various levels of sustainability.
According to the King County Green Schools Program June newsletter, among its myriad activities and achievements, the Mercer Island High School Green Team, “Planned (Earth Week) events to encourage environmentally-friendly food choices as well as carpooling, walking, and biking to reduce carbon footprints. The team shared information about problems with single-use plastics and distributed free durable water bottles collected from the Lost and Found and sanitized for reuse.”
