King County issues excessive heat warning

MI residents can cool off at community center.

With weather predicted to hit the scorching 90s this week, King County has issued an excessive heat warning beginning today and lasting through Friday.

Locally, people can cool off from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily at the Mercer Island Community and Event Center, 8236 SE 24th St. Air conditioning will be running throughout the day and there are plenty of places to sit and relax.

The city asks people who plan to recreate on the lake to do so safely and always wear a life jacket. Water temperatures are still cold, the city added, and offered some hot weather tips: Stay extra hydrated; wear sunscreen and check expiration dates; protect your eyes with a hat or shades; and watch for sunstroke and seek shelter if needed. For pet owners, make sure pets have cool water and accessible shade. The Luther Burbank Park off-leash dog area offers lake access and plenty of tree cover.

Recology will start service one hour early Tuesday through Thursday due to the heat. Residents should place their bins on the curb by 6 a.m. for collection.
