With the heavy rains last week, the city of Mercer Island witnessed at least six significant landslides, affecting access to over a dozen houses as well some natural area trails.

With more rain in the forecast for the beginning of this week, landslide potential is still high due to saturated soils. Data gathered by the USGS underscores this risk, according to a city news release.

As is customary in these situations, the city’s lead Building Official travels directly to the affected site to assess the damage firsthand, and determine whether the buildings involved are still safe for occupancy. Unsafe buildings are “red-tagged” and may not be occupied until cleared by a geo-technical engineer, hired by the owner.
