On behalf of members of the Mercer Island Chamber of Commerce, we would like to encourage Mercer Islanders to “Shop Local” for the holidays. The Town Center and Mercer Village, at the South end of the Island, offer a unique blend of locally owned businesses that serve our community. Both places offer a wide range of retail offerings, including food and dining, home improvement and professional services providers. The goal of “Shop Local” first means more money re-circulates in the community because locally owned businesses often  purchase from other local businesses and service providers.

Keeping funds in the community also maintains and improves the infrastructure and quality of life for residents. It helps retain and create local jobs and supports our unique businesses that are an important part of Mercer Island’s distinct character. Shopping local is not only important to strengthen the local economy and keep businesses on Mercer Island; it also keeps the sales tax dollars here, which help pay for services such as public safety, streets and parks. In addition, it supports local nonprofits; studies show that small-business owners contribute as much as 350 percent more in donations then do most larger businesses.

Also, remember the Shop Local Coupon Book — sponsored by the Chamber and participating businesses — that was available at the farmers market, Chamber office and many businesses this past summer? It has been a huge success, and as we enter the holiday season, we would like to point out that most of the coupons are still valid and welcome at participating businesses. Save money, save time and save gas.

We realize it is not always possible to buy what you need locally, but we do ask that you think “Shop Local” first. Your choice to “Shop Local” supports this wonderful place we call Mercer Island.
