Letter | Thanks, Islanders for keeping it fun

As the summer winds down, the Parks and Recreation Department has good reason to reflect on the generosity and support of the Mercer Island community.

As the summer winds down, the Parks and Recreation Department has good reason to reflect on the generosity and support of the Mercer Island community.

During the 2011-2012 biennial budget planning process, the department faced $25,000 in special event budget reductions. Two programs that were up for elimination were the Fun Mobile and the award-winning Adventure Playground. Both of these programs are unique and focus on activities that help children grow, explore and create in a safe outdoor setting. We found that many in the community share this priority based upon the $25,000 donated to save these programs and other special events facing elimination.

A special recognition goes to the Pritt family, who donated $5,000 towards saving the playground.

The community also stepped up to save the Summer Celebration fireworks display. The Mercer Island Community Fund took the lead with a $10,000 matching donation, as well as Farmers New World Life Insurance Company, with a $10,000 gift.

Parks and Rec is kicking off another campaign to support these activities in 2012.

Mercer Island, can we do this again? We think so! Go to www.miparks.net to make a donation or email diane.mortenson@mercergov.org.
