The proposition put forward by the School Board has been well-thought out and many questions and options vetted in the exhaustive work done by the 21st Century Facilities Committee.
Yes, the amount requested is staggering; but put in perspective, it is very supportable if one considers the historical level of taxes that my parents and their fellow homeowners paid in the ’50s and ’60s to build those schools half a century ago. The money per income per capita that Islanders paid in the 1950s-60s was more than the amount being asked for in the present bond request to build new, modern schools. It’s our turn.
We all benefit from sound schools and the great teachers and programs our schools provide in this community. If we can meet the same level of commitment that previous generations paid for schools, our community will continue to be a strong, vibrant place to live.
