The Mercer Island football team did not fare well against the high-powered Mount Si Wildcats on Friday, as they gave up 28 first-half points, losing 41-16. The loss extends Mercer Island’s losing streak to five consecutive games, but the hope for the future got a little brighter during the second half with the play of the defense and starting freshman quarterback Jeff Lindquist’s two touchdown plays.

Nothing went well during the first half for the Islanders, as they collected only three first downs and punted the ball four times while being shut out. Two of the first downs came on the arm of Lindquist. The first play went for 26 yards on the first play of the Islanders’ second drive of the game. The pass went for 26 yards to junior Brad Idzik, down the Cats’ sideline. Two plays later, Lindquist hooked up with senior Bryce Borer for 36 yards. The two plays set up the Islanders with a first down on the Mount Si six-yard line. Two short running plays and two incomplete passes gave the Wildcats the ball deep in their own end.

In contrast, Mount Si scored touchdowns on each of its first four possessions.

The deficit grew to five touchdowns during the third quarter on a six-yard run by the Wildcats.

Mercer Island finally got on the scoreboard with a long pass play. Lindquist again found Borer downfield for a 76-yard touchdown pass. But the extra point missed, leaving the Islanders with six points. The Islanders would get that point and one more back on a safety later in the quarter.

Mercer Island got on the board again after Mount Si scored on a 23-yard pass. The Islanders got into the end zone on a quarterback keeper by Lindquist.

The Islanders will host Ingraham on Friday with a kickoff at 7 p.m. The Rams lost to Franklin High School, 56-20, and will enter the game with the same 1-5 record as the Islanders.
