Mercer Island’s baseball little leaguers are riding high at the Northwest Regional Tournament in San Bernardino, Calif., after steamrolling through their opponents last weekend for a combined 35-1 score.
The 11/12 majors division all-stars played first against Oregon on Saturday, Aug. 8, at Al Houghton Stadium. William Mansfield allowed just one hit and a walk, and needed just 49 pitches to strike out 8 Oregon batters in a 10-0, four-inning win.
Then they blanked a Little League team from Laramie, Wyo., 12-0 for another early innings win.
Brandon Lawler managed to knock out a flood light with a towering home run hit at the top of the foul pole in left field. Lawler, William Mansfield and Max Hibbert all hit home runs.
On Monday afternoon, the team defeated Billings, Mont., in early innings, 13-1. Next up is Post Falls, Idaho, played today (Aug. 12) at 4:30 p.m. to wrap up pool play.
With the win over Billings Little League, the team secured the top seed for Thursday’s semifinal and, depending on the result, will play again on Saturday to determine final standings.
The Aug. 15 regional championship game will be televised live on ESPN at 6 p.m., Pacific Standard Time.
