Litzow chosen as lead Republican on Senate Education Committee

New 41st District Sen. Steve Litzow, R-Mercer Island, has been selected by his colleagues to serve as the ranking Republican member of a key Senate Committee.

Sen. Steve Litzow, R-Mercer Island, has been selected by his colleagues to serve as the ranking Republican member of the Senate Early Learning and K-12 Education Committee.

In this role, Litzow is responsible for keeping Republican senators apprised of bills referred to the education committee. In addition, he will work with the committee chair in scheduling bills for public hearings.

“Education is my number one priority as a legislator,” Litzow said. “During my campaign, I promised to put our schools first. I am honored that my colleagues have chosen me for this leadership role. I look forward to working with 41st District parents and teachers, and with stakeholders across the state on issues that affect our schools and our children.”

Litzow has also been appointed to serve on the Senate Transportation Committee – another area of key interest to the senator.

“The major chokepoints in our state’s transportation system are centered around the 41st District on I-5, I-405 and I-90. These roadways can be a nightmare for commuters,” Litzow said. “In addition, Washington’s one-day advantage for Pacific Rim trade over other West Coast ports is threatened by gridlock in moving freight to and from our docks. I will work across party lines to find practical solutions to our community’s future infrastructure needs.”

Litzow’s third committee assignment is Financial Institutions, Housing and Insurance. This committee deals with a broad range of issues important to consumers and investors, including banks and credit unions, insurance companies and insurance fraud, mortgage brokers, the uniform commercial code, credit card marketing and technology, and consumer credit history.

The 2011 legislative session begins at noon on Monday, Jan. 10.

“I hope 41st District citizens will contact me with their thoughts and ideas during the upcoming session.” Litzow said. “I welcome feedback on all issues, and I will be happy to help constituents with their questions about state.”
