Making an Escape

The 12th annual triathlon at Luther Burbank Park took place Sunday.

Racer Brian Carter of Sammamish, who finished sixth, splashes his way to shore during the Escape from the Rock Triathlon at Luther Burbank Park on Sunday. Over 700 people took part in the annual event. It was the 12th year of the race, which features a half-mile swim, 12 mile bike ride and concludes with a 2.5 mile run. Islander Dan Newton, 27, came in ninth place with a time of 59:27.6. Less than a minute later, Islanders Todd Behrbaum, 40, finished 12th with a time of 1:00:53.5 and Brian Gierke, 40, finished 13th at 1:01:07.8. A 41-year-old Federal Way man, Phil Spencer, won the event.

A 17-year-old Islander, Natalie Jamerson, placed first in her age group, and 48th overall all among the female participants, with a time the 1:15:55.1. Mercer Island resident Ginny Pietila, 45, completed the race in a time of 1:11:41.7, making her the 23rd woman to cross the finish line.
