Mercer Island Marine Patrol made arrests in five separate boating incidents during the first week of July. The first, a 25-year-old vessel captain, was arrested on July 4 at 5:49 p.m. for boating under the influence. He created a wake while in a no-wake zone and admitted to drinking beer. He failed water-based field sobriety tests, and his boat registration was also expired. Later, at 7:02 p.m., a 20-year-old Mercer Island man was also arrested for boating under the influence. His boat was stopped for an improper display of registration. He was later released to his mother, and his father took possession of the vessel at the boat launch.
The next day, July 5, Marine Patrol stopped a boat going full plane with four stern riders. The boat operator, a 24-year-old Bellevue man, had admittedly been drinking and refused standard field sobriety tests, saying he doubted he would pass. He was arrested off the 4000 block of East Mercer Way at 6:20 p.m.
Four young boaters were arrested at 4:40 p.m., July 6, after their boat was stopped for an expired registration display. Marine Patrol observed a large quantity of alcohol on board. Three passengers under age 21 admitted consuming alcohol. The boat operator passed standard field sobriety tests but was arrested with one count of furnishing liquor to minors. A sober passenger over age 21 took possession of the boat.
A boat with an expired registration was stopped at 6:45 p.m. on July 9 off the 1800 block of West Mercer Way. Police arrested the boat operator, a 34-year-old Seattle man, who admitted to drinking and failed standard field sobriety tests. A sober passenger took control of the boat.
July 5
Forgery: The IRS notified a Mercer Island man, 59, that someone electronically filed a tax return with his name and social security number on March 11. There is no suspect information.
Mail theft: An unknown amount of mail was stolen out of a Mercer Island woman’s mailbox in the 7700 block of 89th Place S.E. between 1 and 3 p.m.
Fraud: A 56-year-old Mercer Island woman lost $140 after entering her credit card information online. She said she was routed to a fraudulent Web site.
July 7
Abandoned vehicle: An abandoned Plymouth Voyager was impounded by Crossroads Towing at 9:09 a.m. in the 3700 block of 86th Avenue S.E.
Accident: A pickup truck went off the road and struck two trees and a sign post after the back of the truck “slid out to the right” at 10:15 a.m. in the 5600 block of W. Mercer Way. No injuries were reported.
Car prowl: An 81-year-old Mercer Island man reported that his Honda Accord was prowled in the 9100 block of Fortuna Drive sometime after 9 p.m. on June 23. The vehicle, which showed no signs of forced entry, was likely left unlocked. A GPS unit worth $275 was stolen out of the center console.
July 8
Car prowl: An unknown object was used to shatter a Volvo’s passenger side window in the 5000 block of 88th Avenue S.E. sometime after 5 p.m. on July 7. A purse, sunglasses and wallet containing $50 in cash were stolen out of the vehicle.
Theft: A 26-year-old Mercer Island man reported that his current 2011 vehicle license tabs were stolen and his car was impounded by Shorewood Management on July 2 because his vehicle was displaying expired tabs.
July 9
Theft: A 29-year-old Mercer Island resident did not pay for towing services worth $140 after his car was towed from Seattle to Mercer Island. According to the police report, the suspect “panicked” after realizing he didn’t have money to pay. He drove away from the scene on two flat tires after the tow truck driver disconnected the vehicle. An hour later the suspect was found at a local bar, where he was arrested at 1:18 a.m. and then booked into the Issaquah Jail.
DUI: Police arrested a 37-year-old Mercer Island man at 1:33 a.m. in the 2200 block of 72nd Avenue S.E. for DUI and reckless driving after he nearly struck a police officer, who had to jump out of the way. The suspect was leaving the area after speaking with officers who were investigating an unrelated case. Police observed that the suspect “appeared to be severely impaired” and smelled of intoxicants. The suspect refused standard field sobriety tests and gave five invalid BAC samples. The officer then took the test himself and found that the BAC instrument was working normally.
Arrest: Police arrested a 61-year-old Mercer Island man at 7:32 p.m. in the 3600 block of 73rd Avenue S.E. after threatening to shoot a neighbor during an argument about speeding in the neighborhood. There were two witnesses of the incident. The suspect was booked into the King County Jail.
Drunkenness: A 20-year-old Everett man was found passed out at Luther Burbank Park after the Summer Celebration fireworks show. He had been drinking and was carrying glass marijuana smoking pipes. He was released to his mother after being taken to the MIPD.
Theft: Two suspects paid for their drinks at the Islander Pub and left through the front door at 11:50 p.m. On the way out, one suspect unplugged the iPhone used for scanning customers’ coupons, then sped away in a black sport vehicle.
July 10
Arrest: A 50-year-old man from California was arrested at 3:07 a.m. in the 9000 block of W. Shorewood Drive after assaulting his wife during an argument. The woman called 911 and the man was booked into the Issaquah Jail.
