Mariners select Mercer Island native in MLB draft | Sports news

Sam Lindquist was chosen by the Mariners in the MLB draft.

Eastside Catholic graduate and Mercer Island native Sam Lindquist was selected by the hometown Seattle Mariners in the 37th round of the Major League Baseball first year player draft last week, at the same time he was finishing a postseason run on the diamond with his current squad at Stanford.

Lindquist, a 6-foot-6 right handed pitcher, made 15 appearances in relief for the Cardinal this season, posting a 2.81 earned run average in 16 innings.

He struck out eight batters and allowed only three extra base hits, allowing opposing hitters only a .169 average.

After redshirting during his freshman season in 2011, Lindquist has one year of eligibility remaining at Stanford. He is the elder brother of University of Washington quarterback Jeff, a former All-American on the gridiron for the Islanders.
