Med Take Back Day set for Oct. 26 / City briefs

Mercer Island will participate in a Med Take Back Day event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 26 to protect the health and safety of the community by collecting unused and expired prescription medications. People can drive up to the city hall building loading dock to drop off medications.

MI Youth and Family Services will receive $288K grant

Mercer Island’s Youth and Family Services (YFS) department will receive a Best Starts for Kids Positive Family Connections grant award of approximately $288,000. As one of 11 agencies to receive the grant out of more than 100 applicants, YFS is set to increase support for Island parents and families and continue implementing the parentingmercerisland.org web-based parenting tool.

PSE preparing submarine transmission cables replacement project

Puget Sound Energy (PSE) has determined through ongoing evaluation that the submarine transmission cables supplying electricity to Mercer Island are aging and in need of replacement. PSE is preparing a project to replace several of these cables located on the bottom of Lake Washington, and the project will likely begin in late 2026 and wrap up by 2029. Islanders are not expected to experience disruptions to electric service as a result of this work.
