Seventeen members of the Mercer Island track and field team competed at last week’s SeaKing District competition, several earning district titles by winning their events.
In the boys competition, junior Eric Schulz won the 800 meter race in 1:58.41, while Matthew Wotipka finished in 10th place in the 3,200 meter competition in 9:57.77. The Islander boys 4×400 relay team of Schulz, Ethan Vu, Nathan Gallatin and Dylan Lesko took fifth place in 3:34.14, while sophomore Greyson Weltyk finished in sixth place with a jump of 5 feet 8 inches.
In the girls competition, Laura Harrison took second overall in the 200 meter race in 26.21, after winning the event at the KingCo meet last week. Freshman Victoria Gersch was fourth in 26.46. Harrison was also second in the 400 meter race in 58.09. Junior Alida Scalzo was seventh overall in the 1,600 meter race, finishing in 5:25.81.
The Mercer Island girls 4×400 meter relay team of Gersch, Piper Casey, Sarah Bjarnason and Harrison finished in first place with a time of 4:00.61. The 4×200 relay team of Harrison, Gersch, Latrevian Saunders and Lorial Yeadon finished in third place with a time of 1:47.40.
Junior Emily Bassett won the girls shot put with a best throw of 35’9.75. She finished 11th in the discus competition with a toss of 50’06. Kris Brackmann was third overall in the high jump with a leap of 4’08, while Emily Lightfoot was seventh in 4’06. Saunders finished the triple jump in 10th place with a jump of 30’9.75.
The 3A state track meet will take place Thursday, May 23 through Saturday, May 25 at Mt. Tahoma High School in Tacoma. Tickets are $9 for adults for one day passes for Friday or Saturday, or $18 for the all three days.
