Mercer Island beats Issaquah | Girls prep swimming

Back in Washington after a trip to an invitational meet in Arizona, the Mercer Island girls swim and dive team hosted Issaquah on Tuesday, Sept. 18. The Islanders won 124-61.

The Islanders took the top spot in the 200 medley relay with Cailtin Cox, Leah Fisk, Grace Wold and Alex Seidel swimming to a 1:52.08 finish. The second Islanders team of Maddie Larkin, Danielle Deiparine, Margaret Seaton and Christina Williamson finished third overall in 1:57.36.

Sabrina Kwan earned an individual title in the 200 freestyle race, qualifying for districts with a 2:02.22 time, while Sabrain Steinhauer was third for the Islanders and Natalie Marques finished in fifth place.

In the 200 individual medley race, Fisk took the top spot, swimming a 3A state qualifying time of 2:15.87. Her teammate Masami Cookson took third, while Seaton finished fourth.

In the 50 freestyle sprint, Wold finished in first place with a state qualifying time of 25.42. Williamson was second in 25.96, while Kristin Hoffman finished fourth and Aeon Gaines took seventh for the Islanders.

Senior Meg Lindsay won the diving competition with a score of 183.70 and Hadley Michaels finished in fourth with 117.35 points.

Cox won the 100 butterfly race in 1:01.43, qualifying for state and Emily Olsen finished in second with a 1:01.52 time. Emily Swaya took fifth place for the Islanders.

Deiparine was two second shy of winning the 100 freestyle race. She finished in second place with at ime of 56.83 behind Issaquah’s Stacy Maier who won in 54.87 seconds. Fisk and Cookson tied for third place in the race, both swimming the even in 57.41.

Kwan took top honors in the 500 freestyle, racing to a 5:34.28 finish, with Leann Tse taking third overall and Jacqueline Li in fifth place.

The Mercer Island team of Williamson, Cox, Seidel and Cookson won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:44.18, a state qualifying time. The Islander quartet of Larkin, Olsen, Seaton and Rachel Hecker were second in 1:49.60.

The 100 backstroke race featured Dieaprine taking second, once again to Maier with a 1:03.61 time. Maier was first in 1:01.44. Angela Riggins finished fourth and Olsen was fifth overall.

Wold won the 100 breast stroke race in state qualifying fashion, finishing in 1:08.06. Seidel finished in third and Larkin was fourth overall.

In the final event of the meet, the 400 freestyle relay, Mercer Island’s Cox, Cookson, Kwan and Wold won the race in 3:47.39, while the group of Fisk, Hoffman, Deiparine and Seidel were second.

The Islanders will host Kennedy Catholic on Thursday, Sept. 20 at 3:30 p.m. at Mary Wayte Pool.
