The Mercer Island boys swim and dive team host Liberty on Tuesday, Dec. 18 in a KingCo meet. The Islanders won 125-58.
The team started the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay, as Noah Deiparine, Andrew Fukuda, Andrew Weiss and Brandt Waesche finished the event in 1:43.98 to qualify for state. The second place team from Mercer Island included Austin Ralph, Kalen Hopkins, Duncan Koontz and Karl MacLane, finishing in 1:46.58.
Koontz took first place in the 200 freestyle race, finishing the event in 1:50.52, just six tenths of a second ahead of Liberty’s Connor Biehl who finished in 1:50.58. Ian Caldwell was third overall and Nick Swaya finished in fourth.
Deiparine won the 200 individual medley race, finishing in 2:02.30 to qualify for the state meet. Fukuda was in third in 2:12.00 and Peter Litzow was in fourth in 2:22.98.
Weiss posted his second time below 22 seconds in the 50 freestyle race, winning the event Tuesday in 21.65. Teammate MacLane was second in 23.20 and Waesche was third in 23.22.
Cody Hall was the only diver to compete for Mercer Island, winning with a final score of 199.20.
In the 100 butterfly event, Caldwell finished first in 58.67 seconds, while Jack Larkin was third in 1:04.40 and Swaya was fifth in 1:08.49.
Liberty’s Nick Klatt was first in the 100 freestyle race in 50.00 seconds, while Waesche finished second in 50.99. Ralph was third in 51.17 and Samuel Peterson was fourth overall.
Chris Apodaca was second in the 500 freestyle race in 5:23.61 and Jake Jenkins was third in 5:43.23. Litzow was fourth in 5:50.78.
Mercer Island won the 200 freestyle relay with the team of MacLane, Fukuda, Caldwell and Weiss, swimming to a 1:33.68 finish. The second place Islander team included Hopkins, Daryl Kwan, Keoni Ogawa and Ralph, finishing in 1:38.84.
Weiss won the 100 backstroke race, taking the top spot in 58.88 seconds, while Deiparine was second in 1:00.85. Teddy Larkin finished in third place in 1:02.65.
Fukuda was second overall in the 100 breast stroke race, finishing in 1:05.19 and Hopkins was third in 1:08.05. Devlin Conway finished the event in fourth place in 1:17.32.
Koontz, Caldwell, Peterson and Waesche teamed up to win the 400 freestyle relay in 3:28.20, while Ralph, Apodaca, Releigh Greutert and Swaya finished in third place in 3:50.90.
The Islanders will take a break for the holidays and will host their next meet on Tuesday, Jan. 8 against Bainbridge Island before hosting Bellevue on Thursday, Jan. 10. Both meets start at 3:30 p.m. at Mary Wayte Pool.
