Since the boys lacrosse season began last month, the Mercer Island boys lacrosse team hasn’t met an opponent on the field it didn’t like.

With 14 games under their belts, the Islanders are unbeaten, tied with Bellevue for the top spot in the league.

“Coming into the season, we knew our defense was the best in the state because we didn’t lose a single player on defense,” said head coach Ian O’Hearn. “The one question mark, at least for other teams, was our offense. I think the guys on offense kind of took that as a personal insult and took it on. Now we have the highest scoring offense in the state. It was a surprise how far and well our offense has come.”

Last week, that domination continued as Mercer Island rolled past Vashon with a 19-0 score and pushed Seattle Prep around on Friday night for a 19-2 win.

Against Seattle Prep on Friday, captain Connor Bernal put in four goals for the team, while Jonathan Wettack and Colton Knebel each scored three goals. This season, Wettack leads the Islanders with 39 points and 24 goals, while Matthew Shields has 21 points and 15 goals.

O’Hearn said Wettack was garnering attention for his play so far this season, including All-American talk.

“He’s already starting to get All-American nods, and lacrosse only gets three for the whole state. I think if he keeps playing the way he’s playing, it’ll be a sure thing,” said O’Hearn.

The Islanders will host Skyline on Saturday, May 1, beginning at 8 p.m. in Islander Stadium as the team enters the final portion of the season. O’Hearn said the biggest game left to play would be the last of the regular season, when the Islanders face Bellevue on May 14.

On Monday night, after the Reporter’s print deadline, the Mercer Island boys shot past Overlake with a 18-1 win. The Islanders are the only undefeated boys team in Division I and Division II play. Wettach scored five goals for the Islanders, while Spencer Tierney had 11 ground balls during the win. Giraud had one save and five ground balls.

The Mercer Island girls team also picked up a win on Monday night, sneaking past Seattle Prep 15-14. The Islanders, currently sitting in a tie for third place, are 7-3-0 this season. During the win Sarah Drucker had six goals for Mercer Island, Talia Homchick had three goals and an assist, while Ellen Haas added three goals of her own. Goalie Erika Eagan had five saves in the win.
