Winning only four events outright was still enough to push the Mercer Island boys swim team into first place at Saturday’s district meet finals, winning 345.5 over second-place Lakeside’s 176.
Earning outright titles in the 200 medley relay (Quinn Markwith, Andy Wingerson, Robbie Homchick and Will Voit), the 50 freestyle sprint (Homchick), diving (Cody Hall) and the 100 breaststroke (Jimmy Deiparine), the Islanders catapulted themselves into the state competition, once again with an unblemished record.
The team, which has already qualified a huge number of swimmers to participate in this weekend’s state tournament, will head to Federal Way with another district title to go with their undefeated dual meet and league title.
The team finished two spots against some of its stiffest competition of the year, Bainbridge, which took third overall at 171 points. Bellevue, the closest local team to the Islanders, finished fourth with 151.5 points.
The state swimming and diving competition runs Friday and Saturday in Federal Way at the King County Aquatic Center.
