Seven Mercer Island High School broadcasting students have been named as finalists for the coveted Golden Microphone awards. These are annual honors presented to the nation’s finest high school and college media students by the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS).

The awards will be announced at the 77th Annual IBS Conference on Saturday, March 4 in New York City.

“These students are to be commended for having earned national recognition,” said Superintendent Dr. Gary Plano. “They are fortunate to have a mentor and coach in media instructor Joe Bryant at MIHS and the support of their families and friends.”

Max Tanzer (sophomore) is a finalist in two categories, Best Sports Talk Program and Best Sports Interview for segments with Seattle Mariners announcer Aaron Goldsmith and pitcher Charlie Furbush.

Natalie Newcomb (senior) is also a Best Sports Interview finalist for a profile she did about the MIHS Swim Team. Matt McLellan (senior) is a Best Air Personality finalist for his work on the “Crew Boy” show. Emily Reyes (sophomore) is also a Best Air Personality finalist as the host of “Everybody Loves Emily.” Parker Simpson (junior) is being recognized for his production work as a finalist in Best Promo Series. Luka Merceta (sophomore) is a Best Newscast finalist. Hannah Wainwright (sophomore) is also a Best Newscast finalist.

“It’s great to see two of our seniors that have been in the program for years get well deserved recognition and I am particularly thrilled with such a great showing from our sophomores and juniors,” Bryant said. “This indicates that there will be great radio heard on 88.9 KMIH for years to come.”
