Mercer Island brothers rank fourth at state math competition

Two Mercer Island students, R. Grady Short and Thomas Short, placed fourth at a state math competition among 89 total teams.

Two Mercer Island students placed fourth at a state math competition among 89 total teams. R. Grady Short and Thomas Short competed at the sixth grade level in the Washington State Math Championship on April 27 in Blaine with two teammates from Seattle Country Day School, Joshua Melmon and David Sharkansky.

Testing included a 30-question individual test, mental math, probability, algebra and geometry. Three members of the team are fifth-graders and competed one grade up. Former NASA astronaut and Navy helicopter pilot Wendy B. Lawrence presented their trophy.
