Mercer Island crews clean up after massive storm

Power outages reported.

Following the savage storm on the night of Feb. 24, Mercer Island police, fire and city crews are in response mode and tending to downed trees, blocked roadways and dangling debris.

Amid the storm and leading into today, power outages have been reported across the Island. Residents without power can report their outage online and peruse the latest information on Puget Sound Energy’s outage map: https://www.pse.com/en/outage/outage-map.

“While response efforts are underway, please avoid heading out on the roads if possible,” the city said.

Earlier this morning, the city reported that the following roads were shuttered: Southeast 29th Street and 70th Avenue Southeast; 4700 East Mercer Way; and 4400 East Mercer Way.

An important message from the city notes, in part: Never approach or drive over downed power lines, and never use outdoor gas appliances indoors. Don’t drive around barricades on closed roads. Treat all intersections without power as four-way stops.

Like in past storms, the community and event center is open with power if residents need to warm up or charge their devices. Also, residents can call the city’s customer service team if they have questions or require assistance at 206-275-7600.

“Islanders are also encouraged to check on their neighbors, especially the elderly and those without access to family members in the area, tech help, or transportation,” the city said.
