The Mercer Island boys lacrosse team faced off with league rival Bellevue on Friday, May 3, falling 9-8.
Both teams had 10-0 league records going into the game, tied for first place in the King West standings.
The game was a defensive match, with both teams tied at one goal a piece at the end of the first quarter. After another tough quarter, persistent offensive work, thanks to a last second goal, gave Mercer Island a 5-3 edge going into halftime. But Bellevue held off the Islanders in the third quarter, while scoring four goals to retake the lead with a 7-3 score going into the final minutes of play.
The Islanders managed to score three more goals, in an attempt to even out the match, but Bellevue’s two goals in the last moments gave the Wolverines the win.
Mercer Island will host Issaquah on Friday, May 10 in an 8 p.m. match at Mercer Island High School.
