Motorists can drop donations for the Muscular Dystrophy Association into Mercer Island firefighters’ boots on Tuesday, July 20. Firefighters will be collecting funds during the annual Fill the Boot fundraiser from 7 a.m. through 12 p.m. at the intersection of Island Crest Way and 40th Street, with a second location at 77th Avenue and S.E. 27th Street.

Last year, Island firefighters raised $6,475 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

“As a fire department, Mercer Island raises close to if not the most money per firefighter per hour for muscular dystrophy in Washington,” said firefighter Tom Guttu, who is coordinating this year’s event.

The International Association of Fire Fighters is the biggest contributor to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, officials said.

Donations can also be mailed to the Mercer Island Firefighters Union, IAFF Local 1762, at P.O. Box 1114, Mercer Island, Wash., 98040.
