The Mercer Island High School girls golf team has earned a second-place trophy at this year’s state tournament.

The Islanders finished with a team score of 58 points for second place, behind Holy Names, which won with a score of 109.

Chelsea Saelee was the Islanders’ top finisher in 11th place. She had a day one score of 76, and 86 on day two for a total of 162.

Haley Chinn finished in 15th, tying with Stephanie Soelling of Everett High School with a two-day total of 164. Chinn finished day one with 79 and day two with 85.

Sarah Peterson finished in a three-way tie for 23rd overall. She had 88 after day one and 92 today for a total of 180.

Kayce Ogishima did not advance to the second day after finishing day one in 47th place with 99. Senior Jackie Pearson also competed in day one, finished in 51st place with a score of 94. She did not qualify for day two.

“Achieving second was good,” said head coach Don Papasedero. Naturally, he said, the team would have loved the title, but second was great.

Papasedero said he hoped the team’s seniors would look back on the team’s cumulative success, rather than just one match.

“They only had one loss in their careers, and their contribution was important.”

From those who will be back on the team next year, the coach said he’ll be looking for continued hard work to replace those seniors lost.

“They need to work hard. The league will be more challenging next year,” he said.

The Mercer Island boys golf team was represented by Crawford Leeds, who finished the tournament in 37th place with a two-day total of 163. He shot 79 on day one and 84 on day two.

Elie Aboulafia, the lone golfer for Northwest Yeshiva High School, finished 14th overall at the 1B/2B boys state tournament. He finished day one with a score of 75 and stayed consistent on day two for 76. Aboulafia’s final score was 151.
