As a high school senior, I would like to give a huge thank you to the 525 guests at last week’s Breakfast of Champions. Support from the community is incredibly valuable and helps us in so many different ways. I see the outcome of what donations can do for our schools directly in the classroom. The journalism class was able to get new computers and the most up-to-date software earlier this year, which has made my job of designing and editing the school paper each month much easier and has immensely improved the quality of The Islander. Being able to use the newest technology also gives me a leg-up as I head to college and look to join the school paper at Willamette University next year.

Even in the classroom, budget cuts directly impact students. Keeping as many teachers as possible is one of the most important areas that the money donated will go to. I have seen firsthand how class size changes the quality of education. I hope that the kindergarteners whom I babysit now will have the same opportunities and advantages that I have enjoyed my four years at MIHS. The amazing teachers and mentors that I have inspire me to achieve my highest goals and have given me the skills I need to excel.

As a member of the Senior Service Club, I had the pleasure of serving all the guests at the Breakfast of Champions and am incredibly appreciative of their contributions. Seeing enthusiastic community members come together to support the Mercer Island schools reminds me how lucky I am to live in an area where education is valued so highly.
