Aljoya resident Fred Fiedler received a lifetime achievement award in Boston for his accomplishments in the field of leadership. The International Leadership Association presented the ILA Lifetime Achievement Award to Fiedler at its annual global conference in October.

Fiedler, who immigrated to the United States from Vienna and was featured in the Reporter story ‘Separated by war, joined in freedom’, is Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the University of Washington in Seattle. Among other honors, he has received the Walter F. Ulmer, Jr. Applied Research Award, the American Psychological Society’s James McKeen Cattell Award, the Award for Distinguished Scientific Contributions to Industrial and Organizational Psychology from the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, and the Distinguished Educator Award from the American Academy of Management.

Fiedler received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and went on to become one of the leading experts in the study of leadership and organizational performance. He is the author or co-author of more than 150 scientific papers and eight books. In 1967, he published “A Theory of Leadership Effectiveness,” which introduced his groundbreaking “Fiedler contingency model of leadership.” This book has since been republished in six different languages.

In addition to serving as a guest professor at the University of Amsterdam in Holland and Louvain in Belgium, Fiedler was a visiting fellow at Oxford University in the United Kingdom and held the SLA Marshall Chair at the U.S. Army Research Institute. He has also lectured at many universities in the United States and abroad.
