To meet the demand for bicycle parking now and in the future, Sound Transit will provide more than 200 new bicycle parking spaces at its facilities by this fall, according to an announcement made on Aug. 17.

The bicycle parking will come in the form of bike lockers and racks funded through a variety of federal grants through the United States Department of Transportation’s Surface Transportation Program and Congestion Mitigation Air Quality programs, wrote Sound Transit spokesperson Bruce Gray in an e-mail to the Reporter.

The installation schedule for the bike parking facilities is still under review, but the project is expected to be completed by this fall, he said.

Sound Transit will spend about $464,000 to install the new lockers and racks, he said, adding that there isn’t a cost breakdown between the 11 stations slated to receive enhancements in bicycle parking. Each locker holds one bike, and each rack can accommodate eight or more bikes.

The facilities include Auburn Station (28 lockers), Columbia City Station (seven lockers, two racks), DuPont Park and Ride (six lockers, one rack), Federal Way Transit Center (eight lockers), Kent Station (22 lockers), Lynnwood Transit Center (20 lockers, four racks), Mercer Island Park and Ride (four lockers), Othello Station (eight lockers, two racks), Rainier Beach Station (16 lockers), South Everett Freeway Station (three racks) and South Hill Park and Ride (eight lockers).

Sound Transit will install 46 more lockers and one more rack at the Columbia City Station in 2011, according to the announcement.
