Arrests
Police arrested a man from Forks, Wash., for driving under the influence of drugs on April 15. According to the police report, police noticed the vehicle when it stopped at two green lights and made a left turn on a red arrow at the intersection of Island Crest Way and S.E. 28th Street. After turning left, the man drove up onto the sidewalk. The driver performed a standard field sobriety test, which he failed. His blood alcohol level, however, revealed .001. Bellevue police brought a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE), but the driver declined the testing. Ibsen towing confiscated his car.
Police arrested a Renton man for drunk driving in the 3200 block of 80th Avenue S.E. on April 14. According to the police report, the man was stopped for expired tabs and failing to stop at a stop sign. The officer smelled alcohol and asked the driver to perform a standard field sobriety test, which he failed. Ibsen towing impounded the man’s car.
An Island man was arrested for driving with a revoked license in the third degree on April 16. Officers pulled the 40-year-old over in the 8000 block of S.E. 27th Street. He was booked into the Issaquah Jail.
Accidents
A pickup truck rear-ended a Metro bus on North Mercer Way on April 16. According to the police report, the bus was stopped at the intersection of North Mercer Way and S.E. 24th Street about to enter the I-90 westbound on-ramp when a black Dodge truck struck it from behind. The driver of the pickup said he stopped behind the bus and leaned over to re-close the passenger door of his truck next to his daughter when his foot slipped off the brake and onto the gas pedal, lurching the vehicle forward. The man sustained a cut to the side of his left eye upon impact. No passengers on the packed bus were injured.
Shoplifting
An employee of the North-end Rite Aid reported a shoplifter on April 18. According to the police report, the employee saw a man walk past the cash register with multiple items in his pockets. The employee asked to see a receipt. The man, an Island resident, emptied one pocket but left the scene with at least one stolen bottle of vitamins. The reporting party recorded the man’s license plate, enabling police to track the 38-year-old down at his Island home. The man was arrested for third-degree theft.
Car prowls
Two women reported that their purses were stolen from a car while visiting a garage sale in the 5000 block of 88th Avenue S.E. on April 16. According to the incident report, the two friends left their purses in the same car while shopping at the sale. When they returned to the Toyota Sienna, they found that the vehicle’s window was broken out and that their purses were missing. Both purses were black leather with zippers.
A woman reported that her car was broken into and her purse stolen while playing tennis at the Mercer Island Country Club on April 20. According to the police report, the woman had locked her purse in the car. While she was driving home, she realized that the rear window was broken. She searched for her purse, but it was gone. The Valentino shoulder purse contained several credit cards, the woman’s license and various other items.
Fraud
An Island business in the 1800 block of 72nd Avenue S.E. reported a fraudulent check made out on the company’s account on April 19. According to the police report, a company employee received a phone call from Olympia regarding the suspicious check. The check was determined to be a forgery. The suspect is a 32-year-old Seattle man.
Abandoned vehicle
Police impounded an abandoned Mazda RX-7 left on the wrong side of S.E. 35th Place in the 9700 block on April 16. According to the police report, the car was left less than eight feet from the center line on the wrong side of the road. The car’s owner could not be contacted. The report of sale on the vehicle was April 8, 2010.
Vandalism
A man living in the 3700 block of 79th Avenue S.E. reported that somebody broke his metal mailbox post during the night of April 18. The owner replaced the post with a new one. The total cost was $80.
Threats/Assault
An employee of Mercer Island Care and Rehabilitation reported that a 76-year-old resident suffering from dementia erupted violently on April 15. According to the police report, the man broke glasses, threw trays, plates and silverware at care givers and chased a staff member with a knife. The man was subdued before any injuries occurred. The man was taken to Overlake Hospital’s emergency room for a mental evaluation.
