Theft

An Island man reported that his 14-year-old daughter stole his Bank of America debit card and used it at the Mercer Island Bank of America, Walgreens drugstore and Queens Nails on Feb. 17. According to the police report, the teenager bought a hair straightener, makeup and a text message and calling card. She was arrested and then released to her father. All cash and merchandise purchased with the card was recovered and entered as evidence.

An Island man reported that his boat trailer was stolen from a friend’s residence in the 3700 block of 88th Avenue S.E. sometime between Feb. 13 and Feb. 16. The value of the trailer is $2,000.

Car accidents

A hit-and-run occurred on Island Crest Way on Feb. 15. According to the incident report, a woman was headed southbound on Island Crest Way in the 4700 block when and a Lexus struck her while merging into her lane. The woman pulled over to the side of the road, having to take multiple corrective actions to maintain control. The driver of the Lexus departed the scene without reporting the accident. The woman called the police. She was able to write down the Lexus’ license plate number. No injuries occurred, but the car’s passenger side front wheel was bent along with the front quarter panel. An officer arrived at the scene and relayed the suspect’s license information to another officer, who drove to the resident’s house. A 20-year-old man who answered the door admitted that he had been driving and had struck the other car. He said that he had pulled over, but since the car he had hit did not follow him, he called his father, who advised him to drive home. While the officer was interviewing the suspect, his parents arrived home and confirmed the report. Both the victim and the driver provided written statements.

A two-car accident occurred at the intersection of S.E. 29th Street and 76th Avenue S.E. on Feb. 18. According to the incident report, a vehicle turning right onto 76th Avenue S.E. failed to completely stop at the sign. As it continued to turn, the vehicle struck the side of a car in the same lane and ricocheted off the car onto the shoulder of the road, where the vehicle struck a fire hydrant and broke it from its base. The driver stated that she was unable to come to a complete stop because she was busy talking to her children in the back of the car.

Mischief

An unknown suspect broke four large glass windows at Mercer Island High School sometime between Feb. 14 and Feb. 16. A few rocks were found at the scene, along with the shattered glass. The estimated damage is $3,000.
