Fraud: An 83-year-old Mercer Island woman wired $500 to Florida after receiving a phone call alerting her that she had supposedly won $2 million in the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes. The caller claimed that a $500 payment was required “to pay for taxes.” The woman fulfilled two more requests totaling $1,200 before deciding to stop sending money.
May 14
Car theft: A Ferndale woman’s Subaru was stolen from her son’s residence in the 8900 block of S.E. 56th Street between 7 p.m., May 14, and 8 p.m., May 15. The vehicle had been locked.
May 15
Car prowl: Two witnesses saw an unknown suspect smash the passenger door window of a Mercer Island woman’s Mercedes-Benz in the 8700 block of S.E. 71st Street. The suspect stole the woman’s purse, which included her driver’s license, checkbook and credit cards.
Car prowl: A Seattle man reported that his car was prowled at the Congregational Church in the 4500 block of Island Crest Way. The incident occurred sometime between 9 and 11:30 p.m. The driver’s window was broken. Stolen items included a Garmin GPS unit worth $200, a back-up camera valued at $99, and an iPod audio connector worth $45. Fingerprint results were negative.
May 16
Accident: A Mercer Island woman backed into a parked vehicle in the lot at 7707 S.E. 27th Street. The parked car was not occupied. She said that she did not initially see any damage.
May 17
Mischief: A 16-year-old Bellevue student’s car was keyed while it was parked along the roadside in the 8800 block of S.E. 40th Street. Another student had argued that she had taken his parking spot, but she left it there and walked to school. Her spare tire cover was stolen.
Vehicle damage: A 19-year-old student reported that her vehicle, a Lexus, was hit by a lacrosse ball in the Islander Middle School north lot. The seventh and eighth grade black lacrosse team was practicing at that time. The passenger rear door had red paint on it and a 1/8-inch chip. The estimated damage was $100.
DUI: A Renton woman was arrested for DUI after she was stopped for swerving in the 8400 block of eastbound I-90. She failed her standard field sobriety tests, refused a PBT and was taken to the MIPD.
DUI: A Bellevue man was arrested in the 7500 block of S.E. 24th Street after he was contacted for a traffic incident. He was found to have been drinking, refused field tests and was booked into the Issaquah Jail.
May 18
Car crash: A vehicle drove into a concrete barrier after exiting from I-90 eastbound at 77th Avenue S.E. After driving over the overpass, the vehicle landed on I-90, leaving evident damage.
Arrest: A 19-year-old Seattle man was arrested in the 3200 block of 78th Avenue S.E. during a traffic stop for a misdemeanor warrant. He was given over to Seattle Police custody.
Assault: A Little League baseball coach pushed and threatened a boy during a baseball game in the 8200 block of S.E. 78th Street. The boy was with a group of teens playing near the field during the game.
Robbery: A 20-year-old Redmond man was assaulted while walking on a trail in the 2600 block of Island Crest Way near the Park and Ride. The man was meeting with two women and was knocked unconscious by a male who came out of the woods. Unknown weapons were involved. The victim’s backpack and phone were stolen.
May 19
Traffic offense: A Newcastle man was arrested in the 7600 block of N. Mercer Way for multiple equipment violations and having a report of sale listed as Nov. 12, 2009. He was driving with a suspended license and had eight FTAs on record. He was booked into the Issaquah Jail, and his vehicle was left at the scene.
Assault: A Mercer Island student was arrested for assaulting another student at Mercer Island High School. She was booked into the Issaquah Jail.
Theft: An unknown suspect stole a bottle of Ravenswood wine from the North-end QFC. The suspect was caught on surveillance camera. The bottle was worth $13.99.
Weapons violation: A 17-year-old Mercer Island male was arrested in the 4100 block of Boulevard Place for the possession of a Smith & Wesson gun and ammunition as well as glass pipes, suspected amphetamine and cocaine.
Arrest: A Seattle male was arrested for an outstanding Mercer Island warrant confirmed with NORCOM. He was picked up at Rainier Avenue South/Charles Street and transferred into MI custody, then booked into the Issaquah Jail.
May 23
Car prowl: A Mercer Island woman reported that a jazz bass guitar was stolen from her Lexus sometime between 6:30 p.m., May 22, and 12:30 p.m., May 23. During that timeframe, the car had been parked — locked — at Bellevue Square and at the victim’s home in the 8000 block of S.E. 34th Place. There was no sign of forced entry. The loss totals $600.
May 24
Theft: A Columbia City woman’s Blackberry cell phone was stolen from her bicycle, where she had left it hanging while visiting the Bank of America in the 2800 block of 80th Avenue S.E.
May 25
Theft: A Mercer Island woman reported that an envelope of gift certificates was stolen from her home in the 9000 block of S.E. 50th Street between Jan. 1 and Feb. 28. The victim’s employee used a gift certificate during the time of the theft. The loss totals $400.
Forgery: The MIPD assisted in identifying a suspect who forged four checks at the Mercer Island Albertsons from May 11 to May 25. The checks and ID had been stolen from a Burien resident. The suspect was identified as a Seattle woman.
May 26
Theft: A suspect stole four wine bottles from the North-end QFC, passing all cash registers before exiting the west doors. The suspect was then confronted by a wine vendor, but left after returning the wine. A CD of the incident was burned, but there is no suspect information.
DUI: A Woodinville woman was arrested in the 4200 block of Holly Lane after a witness reported an erratic car on the narrow roadway. The vehicle was located, and the driver, who refused field tests, was arrested for DUI. The vehicle was impounded, and the driver was processed and released to a sober adult. A citation was issued.
Theft: A Mercer Island woman reported that 15 wine bottles were stolen from the wine refrigerator in her garage in the 7400 block of 78th Avenue S.E. Various people had access to the garage: a landscaper, duct cleaner, window cleaner, house cleaner and baby sitter, and the woman had been out of town for five days. No other items were stolen. The loss totals $1,500.
May 27
Car theft: A Seattle man’s Honda was stolen from in front of St. Monica’s in the 4300 block of 88th Avenue S.E. while he was working sometime between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.
Assault: A 17-year-old male was taken into custody for assaulting another student at Mercer Island High School. The assailant took the victim’s glasses and would not return them upon being asked. The victim was then assaulted after throwing the suspect’s sweatshirt and soda in a trash can.
Embezzlement: A Renton man reportedly embezzled $14,938 from the Stroum Jewish Community Center from Jan. 15, 2009 through May 14, 2010. The suspect is the SJCC accounting manager.
Found: A Mercer Island man found a large box of ammunition in his garage in the 2800 block of 69th Avenue S.E. It was turned into the MIPD to be destroyed.
