Theft

A man living in the 9700 block of S.E. 35th Place reported that his dump trailer was stolen from the side of the road on March 13. A surveillance camera captured the theft on tape. The estimated loss is $7,000.

A Covenant Shores employee reported that somebody stole two matching men’s and women’s bikes from the parking garage on March 6. According to the police report, the theft occurred sometime between the summer of 2009 and March 6. The locking chains for the bikes, both Dynacraft models, are also missing. The approximate loss is $210.

Peeping Tom

A 24-year-old Mercer Island man was caught peeping into the window of a home in the 4200 block of Mercerwood Drive on March 17. The suspect was scared off when a witness called out to him. No description of the suspect was obtained.

Accidents

An Island woman crashed into a “No Parking” sign in the 8200 block of S.E. 28th Street on March 17. According to the police report, the woman lost her concentration when she reached for Jell-O that was about to fall off the passenger’s seat onto the floor. As she reached to grab the Jell-O, the car veered off the road and into the sign. No injuries were reported.

A 67-year-old woman lost control of her car in the parking lot of the Community Center at Mercer View on March 17. According to the police report, the woman was pulling into a parking stall and applied the brakes, but the car, a Honda Accord, suddenly accelerated. The car flew over the landscaped parking island, struck a traffic sign and continued into the adjacent parking area, where she struck a second vehicle. The car continued veering through the parking lot, over another landscaped area and onto S.E. 24th Street. The woman traveled westbound on 24th Street about 60 feet before she was able to bring the vehicle to a stop by turning off the ignition. Police later started the car and pushed on the brake pedal, and it appeared to be operating correctly.

A two-car collision occurred in the 9600 block of S.E. 36th Street on March 10. According to the police report, a driver was stopped in the bus lane on the side of the road waiting for traffic to pass so that he could merge. He thought it was safe to enter traffic, so he accelerated and pulled into the road, heading westbound. He struck an oncoming car. The driver of the second vehicle said that the man pulled out suddenly and that she did not see him. The driver of the first car admitted fault for the collision. Damage was sustained to the front bumpers of both vehicles.

Two cars collided while heading northbound in the 6200 block of Island Crest Way on March 11. According to the police report, a car stopped at the crosswalk of S.E. 42nd Street for a pedestrian to pass. The driver of another car was behind a slower-moving vehicle and was about to change lanes when the car ahead of her merged into the outer lane first. The woman did not see the stopped car ahead of her and rear-ended it. No injuries were reported.

Arrests

Police pulled over and arrested a reckless driver on March 11. According to the police report, the officer was almost hit head-on while leaving the North-end QFC. The woman driving struck the curb on 84th Avenue and was pulled over. She was given a standard field sobriety test, which she failed. The woman was transported to Overlake Hospital for a blood draw and then booked into the King County Jail.

Police arrested a Seattle woman for drunk driving in the 2400 block of 76th Avenue S.E. on March 15. According to the police report, the suspect did not stop at a stop sign. The woman was pulled over and smelled of alcohol. She refused to take a standard field sobriety test and was placed under arrest.

Police received a call of a possible drunk driver in downtown Mercer Island on March 15. When they arrived at the scene, they found a vehicle matching the description given of the one leaving Jackson’s Shell station. The driver left the parking lot without his headlights on. Police pulled him over in the 2900 block of 78th Avenue S.E. He admitted to drinking and failed his standard field sobriety test.

A Spokane man was arrested for driving with a revoked license in the 8100 block of North Mercer Way on March 16. According to the police report, he was pulled over for a series of improper lane changes between North Mercer Way and Island Crest Way. A computer check revealed that the driver had a suspended license with 10 Failure To Appears (FTA). He was transported and booked into the Issaquah Jail.

Burglary

A burglary was reported in the 4300 block of Fernbrook Drive on March 15. According to the police report, an unknown suspect entered a woman’s residence through the front door. The thief entered the home with a hidden key and stole various pieces of jewelry.
