May 8
Theft: A couple living in the 4300 block of 92nd Avenue S.E. reported that several items were stolen from their home when their daughter had friends over while the couple was out of town. According to the police report, the guests were at the house from May 8 to May 11. The family noticed that a laptop, jewelry and a camera were missing from the home, among other items.
May 10
Illegal parking: Officers located a car illegally parked in a handicapped stall at the Mercer Island Park & Ride on May 10. According to the police report, the Chevrolet Lumina did not have a handicap placard or license plate. The plates were also expired. The car was impounded.
May 11
Walk-Off: A woman walked out of Queen Nails salon without paying for her manicure and pedicure on May 11. Two Queen Nails employees witnessed the incident.
Wallet found: An Islander found a Seattle man’s wallet in the bushes of the 2200 block of West Mercer Way on May 11. According to the police report, the owner of the wallet is wanted for escape from community custody.
Car prowl: An Island woman reported that her Ford Taurus was prowled while parked, unlocked, at her apartment complex in the 3000 block of 80th Avenue S.E. The stereo face plate was taken. The theft occurred sometime between May 11 and May 14.
May 12
theft: Police arrested an Island woman on May 12 for stealing a license plate registration tab. According to the police report, an officer stopped the woman for speeding in the 7600 block of North Mercer Way. The officer observed that the rear license plate was missing its expired year tab. The driver informed the officer that she personally placed the tab on the plate sometime in January 2010. The expired date for the missing tab is Jan. 29, 2011. The license plate tab was stolen sometime between Jan. 29 and May 8. The location where the theft occurred is unknown.
Illegal substance: A 20-year-old Island man was arrested for the possession of marijuana — less than 40 grams — on May 12. According to the police report, the man was booked into the Issaquah Jail.
Mailbox struck: An unknown suspect struck and destroyed a mailbox on 66th Avenue S.E. The incident occurred sometime between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. on May 12. The cost for replacement is $100.
May 13
Collision: A two-car accident occurred in the 4800 block of East Mercer Way on May 13. The driver of the first car was heading northbound at about 30 miles per hour. The driver of the second car was heading southbound, when his car crossed over the line and collided with the northbound driver. The man was ejected from his car and suffered a fracture to his right leg. He was rushed to Harbor View Medical Center for treatment. The man in the vehicle that was hit was not injured. Both cars sustained damage.
Theft: A Seattle man reported that somebody stole the tower rack speakers off his boat on May 13. The boat was moored at the Mercerwood Shore Club.
Illegal dumping: Some unknown suspects illegally dumped a pile of mixed gravel at a construction site in the 8000 block of S.E. 45th Street on May 13. According to the police report, the owner of the building company working on the site estimated that clean-up would cost about $1,200.
May 15
Crash: A 20-year-old Island man crashed into two parked cars while driving along West Mercer Way on May 15. According to the police report, the man was heading northbound in the 5400 block of West Mercer Way when he drifted onto the shoulder and collided into two cars, pushing both vehicles into the ditch. The second car was pushed up onto a Bobcat tractor bucket. The driver lost his front passenger side tire and left wheel marks on the asphalt, allowing the officer to follow the suspect to his home. By that time the young man had left the residence in his mother’s car. When he returned, he admitted that he had caused the destruction. He blamed a head injury for his lack of control, saying that it caused him to “not think straight.”
Cycling crash: A three-cyclist accident took place near Fernridge Lane on East Mercer Way on May 15. According to the police report, the cyclists were heading northbound when a car passed the group. One of the cyclists turned to look at the car and bumped into the cyclist in front of him, propelling him over his handlebars and onto the road. He suffered injuries to his head and face. The rider was unconscious for 10 minutes. The Mercer Island Fire Department transported him to Harborview Medical Center. The other two cyclists were not injured.
May 16
Bike fall: A cyclist heading northbound on West Mercer Way attempted to make a sharp turn onto 65th Place S.E. and fell off his bike on May 16. The cyclist said that he fell over while attempting to make the sharp turn. He sustained minor injuries to his knees and face. No apparent road hazards or other contributing factors were found.
