Drugs
A security officer at Mercer Island High School contacted three young males for smoking marijuana on April 14. According to the police report, one of the teenagers ran off and dropped a small bag containing the drug. A wooden pipe was also confiscated.
Shoplifting
An employee of the North-end QFC reported a shoplifter on April 23. According to the police report, the employee caught a female from Seattle suspected of stealing two six packs of beer, a bag of Sun chips and a Snapple drink.
Vandalism
Witnesses called to report vandalism at the Mercer Island Park & Ride on April 23. According to the police report, four individuals were seen breaking a Metro sign. The officer arrived and located the four young adults, all of whom denied the allegations. A witness was called and identified the youth seen vandalizing the sign. MIPD arrested the suspect and booked him into the King County Jail. The approximate value of the destroyed property is more than $750.
An officer discovered newly painted graffiti in the Lid Park on April 26. According to the police report, spray cans and other associated evidence were recovered from the scene to be processed for fingerprints.
Arrests
Police stopped a Langley, Wash., woman for speeding and equipment violations in the 7600 block of North Mercer Way on April 21. According to the police report, the officer noticed a glass pipe in the driver’s purse as she was searching for her license. The officer asked the woman if she had any drugs in the car, and she said no. Another MIPD officer noticed the woman trying to hide something in her purse. She denied a consent to search. She was arrested, delivered her Miranda rights and transported to the Mercer Island Police Department. Her vehicle was impounded for a search.
Police arrested a driver with a suspended license and seven Failure To Appears on April 21. According to the police report, the man was pulled over in the 2300 block of West Mercer Way after a computer check revealed the misdemeanor. The driver was identified as the owner of the car and booked into the Issaquah Jail.
Police pulled over a man in the 4200 block of Island Crest Way on April 24 for expired tabs. The officer noticed a smell of intoxicants, and the driver admitted to drinking. He failed his Standard Field Sobriety Test and provided a breathalyzer result of .076. He was processed and released to a roommate.
Car prowl
An Island woman reported that her Volkswagen Passat was prowled between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. on April 23. The woman’s car was parked at her home in the 9000 block of North Mercer Way. The car was locked, but no damages were sustained. Nothing was stolen. Police did not look for fingerprints because the car had been cleaned up and driven all day prior to the report.
A woman reported that her Nissan Quest was prowled on April 27. According to the police report, the car was parked in the 3600 block of 80th Avenue S.E. The woman returned to her car to discover that the front passenger side window was broken and her purse was missing. The purse included an iPod Touch, several checks, a credit card and cash.
A man reported that his car was prowled on April 27. According to the police report, several electronic items were stolen, including a flashlight, GPS, iPod, Nikon digital camera and assorted accessory power cords. The car was parked at the man’s residence in the 7600 block of S.E. 40th Street. The car was not damaged.
Burglary
A woman reported that her storage unit at her Shorewood Apartment complex was broken into on April 23. According to the police report, the door was forced open. Multiple items, including a box of paper and scrapbooking tote, were stolen. The theft occurred sometime between April 9 and April 17. Other storage units had signs of attempted burglaries.
A 12-year-old boy reported that unknown suspects repeatedly rang the doorbell of his family’s residence in the 8000 block of S.E. 73rd Street on April 27. When the boy did not answer the door, the suspects threw a rock through the front window and possibly entered the residence through the unlocked door. The suspects stole a computer from the residence either by pulling it through the shattered window or leaving through the front door.
Accidents
A two-car accident occurred at the intersection of S.E. 47th Street and Island Crest Way on April 23. According to the police report, a man was driving northbound on Island Crest Way while another man was making a left-hand turn onto S.E. 47th Street, heading eastbound. The man on Island Crest Way struck the turning car in its rear quarter panel. No injuries were reported.
An Island woman struck a cyclist while attempting to make a left-hand turn from North Mercer Way onto 77th Avenue S.E. on April 23. According to the incident report, the car was parked parallel to North Mercer Way and started to turn left when it struck a cyclist riding alongside on the sidewalk. The woman said that she did not see the cyclist because she was distracted by a police car that had just passed. Damages and statements from both sides matched. No injuries were reported.
