Accidents

A car struck a cyclist riding eastbound on North Mercer Way on Sept. 19. According to the incident report, the vehicle was headed northbound on North Mercer Way, approaching 77th Avenue S.E. The driver began to turn left and, not seeing the cyclist, crossed his path. The cyclist collided with the car, hitting the windshield. The incident was witnessed by others. The cyclist, a Port Angeles man, suffered cuts and bruises. The driver was cited with failure to yield the right-of-way.

A 14-year-old was hit by a car while skateboarding in the 8000 block of S.E. 24th Street on Sept. 19. The record was documented as a hit-and-run because the driver left the scene without reporting the incident. The teenager’s father called police after his son came home with a broken right elbow and an injured right knee. According to the incident report, the boy said he was struck by an elderly man who got out of his vehicle, checked on the skateboarder and then departed, despite the fact that the boy’s friends were yelling for help. The report has been forwarded to the detective unit for possible filing charges against the elderly driver. There is currently one suspect, an 80-year-old Island man. The victim has an infraction charge on his record for use of a skateboard/coaster on the roadway.

Fraud

A woman living in the 9611 block of S.E. 36th Street reported that her son had opened up several fraudulent accounts under her name. According to the Sept. 24 report, more than $1,500 had been stolen through identity theft on Aug. 1.

A man living in the 7100 block of S.E. Maker Street reported that two fraudulent charges had been made to his checking account in the amount of $91.96 on Sept. 21. The charges were for a subscription to a jewelry magazine. According to the report, the magazine’s publisher has already reversed the charges and refunded the victim.

Theft

A woman living in the 7000 block of 82nd Avenue S.E. reported that two pieces of mail were stolen from her mailbox on Sept. 22. According to the incident report, the woman returned to her mailbox a few hours after posting the personal letters and saw that the mailbox door was open and that the letters were missing. The mail pick-up flag was still down. The woman checked her neighborhood and did not find the mail anywhere on the ground. She notified the United States Postal Service in addition to the MIPD.

A woman called police to report that her son’s backpack and trumpet were taken from the Lakeridge Elementary School playground on Sept. 24. The approximate loss is $1,100.

Arrests

A man living in the 8500 block of S.E. 72nd Street called to report a male smoking marijuana in his truck, which was outside the reporting party’s residence. Police responded to the call and located the male at Mercer Island High School. The suspect gave consent to a vehicle search, during which the officer found less than 40 grams of marijuana. The subject was arrested.

A Seattle man was arrested for driving with a suspended license on Sept. 23. Police pulled over the man for driving without headlights when required. His vehicle was impounded.

A Mercer Island female was arrested for stealing her roommate’s car on Sept. 26. According to the incident report, the victim had allowed his roommate to borrow his Mercedes-Benz in the past. The female then started taking the car and not returning it for days. The victim then told his female roommate that if she took his car one more time without asking, he would report the incident. On Sept. 25, the woman reportedly stole the man’s only set of keys to the car and drove away. She was arrested for motor theft.

Car prowls

A woman living in the 3400 block of 77th Avenue S.E. caught a male prowling her car on Sept. 23. According to the police report, the woman saw the suspect trying to break into her car and chased the suspect away. The thief, however, had already stolen several items from the woman’s Subaru and Toyota, including a portable Sony CD player. A Mongoose Montana 21-speed bicycle was found at the scene.

A man living in the 3400 block of 76th Place S.E. reported that his car was prowled on Sept. 24. According to the incident report, a metal clip board, jumper cables, $2 in cash and the car’s instruction manual was taken. The total approximate loss is $47. The vehicle was not damaged. A woman living on the same street reported that her car was also broken into. Her children’s Playstation 2 was stolen from the vehicle. Two more prowl incidents occurred on the same street. The victims reported that their vehicles were entered and searched, but nothing was stolen. A woman living in the 6200 block of 79th Avenue S.E. reported that her Mercedes-Benz was entered and a tote bag with various items was taken. The car was sitting unlocked. The approximate loss is $400. Another woman on the same street reported that her car had been entered and rummaged through, yet nothing was taken.

A man living in the 7600 block of S.E. 34th Street reported that his Hyundai Sonata and Lexus RX350 were broken into on Sept. 23. According to the report, $1,100 worth of property was stolen from the two unlocked vehicles.
