The Mercer Island Police Department apprehended a suspect from a recent North Mercer Way burglary, thanks to the victim homeowners’ surveillance footage.

According to the the department’s announcement Wednesday on its Emergency Management page on Facebook, Detective Sergeant Ryan Parr obtained a search warrant on Tuesday. Parr located and arrested the suspect near Sunset Highway and searched the Mercer Island condo where the suspect lives with his father, near the park and ride along the 2400 block of 81st Ave. SE.

Detectives and officers recovered items taken in the burglary on his person and inside the residence. The suspect was booked into King County Jail on a multitude of charges stemming from the burglary. Police stated the suspect may be responsible for several of the recent storage unit break-ins and some retail theft off the Island.

Police were tipped off after the victim homeowners produced surveillance footage showing the suspect approaching the house, wearing distinct clothing and carrying an unusual backpack.

Detective David Canter recognized the boots and hat the suspect was wearing from a previous encounter. Further research solidified their probable cause, which resulted in the search warrant and arrest warrant.

MIPD Services Commander Leslie Burns said she expects the suspect to be released from King County Jail within the coming days and encouraged Islanders to communicate with friends and neighbors to avoid becoming burglary targets.
