Mercer Island police take the plunge for Special Olympics

Nine members of the Mercer Island Police Department jumped into the frigid waters of Lake Sammamish during the Special Olympics Polar Plunge on Sunday, March 17.

Nine members of the Mercer Island Police Department jumped into the frigid waters of Lake Sammamish during the Special Olympics Polar Plunge on Sunday, March 17.

The MIPD participated in the event for the first time this year, joining the Redmond Police Department and Special Olympic athletes for the plunge and raising more than $25,000 for Special Olympics.

MIPD participants included Police Chief Ed Holmes, Sgt. Brian Noel, Records Specialist Jolene Maggard, PSO Anna Ormsby, Officer Michael Vickers, Records Specialist Janelle Timm, Detective Todd Roggenkamp, Corporal David Herzog and SRO Detective Chad Schumacher.

Next year the MIPD plans to organize a larger team to join the plunge. Fundraising events for the 2014 plunge will begin this summer, and the MIPD welcomes local businesses and residents to help fundraise and sponsor or support the event.
