Auto accidents
An Island teen with an interim driver’s license was in a collision that occurred in the intersection of Merrimount Drive and Island Crest Way at 9 a.m. on Oct. 31. According to the police report, the 16-year-old Islander lost control while she was turning left from Merrimount onto a wet Island Crest Way. Her SUV fishtailed into the other lane, hitting an oncoming pickup truck. Neither driver was injured in the crash.
An 18-year-old Island resident was involved in a deadly traffic accident in Eastern Washington on the afternoon of Sunday, Oct. 19. He was a driving a 2006 Mustang eastbound on Hwy 26 southeast of Vantage when another driver failed to yield the right of way and turned left onto the highway from a side road. The impact killed the 45-year-old driver from Quincy, in other car. The Washington State Patrol report stated that speed may have been a factor. Both vehicles were totaled in the accident. Eight people in all were involved in the crash. All wore their seat belts. They were treated at the Quincy Valley Medical Center.
Arrests
A 23-year-old Island resident was arrested for driving with a suspended license after she was stopped for speeding in the intersection of S.E. 40th Street and 78th Avenue around 1:15 p.m. on Oct. 29.
A 20-year-old Islander and employee of QFC was arrested for an outstanding warrant while working at the North-end grocery store at 11:40 a.m. on Oct. 27. According to the police report, police learned about the employee’s whereabouts from contacting a man sleeping in her old car at Island Crest Park. A records check showed that the car’s registered owner had several arrest warrants in her name, so the officer awoke the man sleeping in the driver’s seat to inquire about them. The man told police that he had recently bought the car and the previous owner with the warrants worked at the QFC.
Thefts and vandalism
An unknown suspect stole cash from the tip jar at Emerald City Smoothie in the Town Center around 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 29.
An iPod and cell phone were stolen from a 15-year-old student’s backpack around 8 a.m. on Oct. 28 at the high school.
A car window was smashed or possibly shattered without cause during the night of Oct. 26 while parked in the garage of a home in the 9000 block of S.E. 51st Place. According to the police report, nothing was missing from the car and an object that broke the window was not located.
