Mercer Island High School seniors Hanna Puetz and Thomas Mehdi were the Rotary Club’s Islanders of the Month for October.
Puetz is secretary of the National Honors Society, a member of the Spanish Honors Society, DECA and the MIHS girls tennis team. She is also the journalism page editor for The Islander newspaper.
Outside of school, Puetz works as a Starbucks barista. She has served as the Big Climb team captain since 2012, leading a team in fundraising activities and the 69 flight stair climb. As a Washington Business Week ambassador, she has given presentations to recruit students to attend business week camps, and raised money to provide financial aid to Washington Business Week attendees.
Mehdi is the founding officer of the National League of Young Men, a member of the National Honor Society, Robotics Club, DECA and the MIHS lacrosse and football teams. He has served as a coach for spring and fall lacrosse and Mercer Island Boys and Girls Club basketball.
Mehdi went on a service trip to Tijuana, Mexico with members of the Mercer Island Presbyterian Church to build houses.
His special interests include back country skiing, hiking, rock climbing, wakeboarding and he has traveled to 25 states and 12 countries.
