A sign offering to return a custom-made four-fingered glove was posted on a tree near the corner of 78th Avenue S.E. and S.E. 27th Street in the downtown business district of Mercer Island, Jan. 15.

An Island man called police on Feb. 13 to report a neighbor shooting Canadian geese. According to the incident report, the man did not see any geese get hit and wished to remain anonymous. Officers contacted the subject, who admitted to using a pellet gun to ward off geese from his dock, where they often leave excrement. He denied hitting any geese and said that he was unaware that the birds are protected. The man turned his pellet gun over to police for disposal.

A 55-year-old man was arrested for shoplifting at Walgreens on March 24. According to the police report, a Walgreens customer saw the man set off the security alarm while leaving the drug store. The witness followed the suspect to the Park and Ride, called 911 and approached the suspect to ask him about the incident. When questioned, the suspect initially denied being in the store, then admitted he had been at Walgreens and pulled two Gillette razors, a Conair Personal Trimmer, and a Wahl Classic Fader Haircutting Kit from his pocket. The suspect was arrested and booked into the Issaquah Jail.

A 46-year-old Fall City man was arrested on Mercer Island for reckless driving after he was observed traveling 110 mph on the I-90 floating bridge on March 10. When stopped, he told the state trooper that he was trying to get home to make a bid on eBay before the auction closed. The man was booked into the King County Jail on reckless driving charges.

A 19-year-old man was arrested for possession of marijuana after being pulled over for a traffic violation on March 9. According to the report, police smelled a strong odor of marijuana when speaking to the driver. When asked about the marijuana, the suspect admitted that he had been smoking it. When asked if there was more in the car, the suspect said ‘yes’ and asked the officer if he wanted any.

An Island man, posing as a Mercer Island city contractor, attempted to schedule the removal of a tree located at a residence in the 3000 block of 67th Avenue S.E. on March 18. Suspicious of the man’s stated identity, the owner of the residence reported the incident to the city attorney, who requested an investigation. Forged documents from the suspect were placed into evidence.

An employee of Albertsons reported that an unidentified man walked out of the store with a shopping basket full of cosmetic products on April 23. According to the report, the man walked out with $200 of Oil of Olay cosmetics.

Two dogs reportedly attacked and killed two chickens in the 4800 block of East Mercer Way on May 11. The dogs were placed back into the control of their owner.

A Mercer Island woman notified police that a garden hose was attached to a city fire hydrant in the 3800 block of 83rd Avenue S.E. on June 14. Mercer Island firefighters found that the hose led to the home of an 80-year-old man, who could not be contacted. The hose was stretched across two lawns and under a fence, likely to a backyard swimming pool, according to the police report.

Three juvenile males were contacted for painting half of a fence at Roanoke Landing in the 1600 block of Roanoke Way during the night of June 8. According to the police report, one male had a rolling paint brush in hand and told police that “he was doing a self project of freshening up the park,” but admitted that such activity was likely illegal.

A man living in the 8100 block of S.E. 77th Place called to report two males trespassing through his garage on July 29. According to the police report, the man was sleeping in the garage with his children when he awoke to find two males walking through. The two men then opened the garage refrigerator door. The owner of the house yelled at the men, who ran to a white SUV parked on the street and drove away northbound. Nothing was taken from the refrigerator.

A man living in the 9200 block of S.E. 70th Place reported that an unknown suspect pulled the screen door to his back deck off its track and dragged a small floor rug out onto the deck. The incident occurred at night on July 16. Raccoons are suspect.

A “runaway car” struck a house in the 3200 block of 74th Place S.E. on Aug. 11. According to the incident report, a woman living in the neighborhood left her car in her garage in neutral, without the parking break on, while she ran into the house to get something. Because her driveway is so steep, the car began to roll backward, down the driveway, across the street, and crashed into the outside of her neighbor’s house. The vehicle caused damage to the exterior of the home and broke some water pipes, causing leakage. The Mercer Island Fire Department was called to the scene and turned off the street’s water supply. The rear of the car was also damaged.

Police were unable to locate a suspect who broke into a locked construction site in the 2200 block of 50th Avenue S.E. on the night of Sept. 9. According to the police report, the suspect activated the emergency shut-off switch on a backup generator for a water pump, causing $1 million in damage to construction equipment. Police obtained latent fingerprints and reportedly had “possible suspects” at the time.

An Island man discovered and reported two marijuana plants growing in the Lid Park on Nov. 23. The plants, which were approximately two feet in height, were removed for destruction.
