The Mercer Island triathlon team is recruiting athletes for the 2016 season. MI Athletic Club owner Ginny Pietila will lead the team, which is capped at 10 premier coached athletes and 30 total.
The season runs March 1 through July 31. The group will train at 6 a.m. on Tuesdays at MI Athletic Club, at 6 a.m. on Fridays at Mary Wayte Pool, at 8 a.m. on Saturdays at various locations for group runs and at 11 a.m. on Sundays at MI Athletic Club for strength training. You do not have to be a member of MI Athletic Club to join the team.
Pietila said her intention and focus with the team this year is to “encourage everyone to think ‘outside the box’ in how they train and race.”
The cost is $475 for workouts and a 2016 training and racing kits. Premier coached athletes pay $850 for individualized coaching and a training plan aimed at their key event.
The team is updating its look this year, moving away from the black and red and toward the MI Athletic Club colors of bright blue and lime green, Pietila said.
The season kicks off Feb. 28 with a party at 11 a.m. for registered athletes.
